Beloved character Bridget Jones is back! In a new twist, her latest adventure, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, won’t be hitting movie theaters. Instead, it will debut exclusively on Peacock streaming on February 14, 2025. The iconic role, first introduced by author Helen Fielding in the 1996 novel Bridget Jones’s Diary, was brought to life by Renée Zellweger in the 2001 film adaptation. Zellweger’s portrayal earned her an Oscar nomination, and she returned as Bridget in 2004’s Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason and 2016’s Bridget Jones’s Baby. Now, 24 years after she first took on the role, Zellweger is back for another chapter in Bridget’s life.
A New Chapter for Bridget
Peacock just released the first trailer for Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, based on Fielding’s 2013 novel of the same name. This time, Bridget is a widow raising her young children after the death of her husband, Mark Darcy (played in past films by Colin Firth). In this new chapter, Bridget tries to juggle single motherhood with her return to the dating scene, catching the interest of two very different men: her children’s school teacher, Mr. Wallaker (Chiwetel Ejiofor), and a younger man named Roxster (Leo Woodhall). Hugh Grant also makes a surprise return as the mischievous Daniel Cleaver, a role he played in the first two movies but skipped in Bridget Jones’s Baby.
Talented Team Behind Mad About the Boy
The film is directed by Michael Morris, known for the Oscar-nominated To Leslie, with Helen Fielding, Dan Mazer, and Abi Morgan on board as co-writers. Although Mark Darcy’s character has passed away, Colin Firth reprises his role in a unique way, appearing as a figment of Bridget’s imagination.
Why Bridget Jones’s New Film Is Skipping Theaters
While previous Bridget Jones films premiered in theaters, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy will be available directly on streaming. This change comes amid a shift in how romantic comedies are released, with many now debuting on streaming platforms. Although the original Bridget Jones’s Diary was a box office hit, the franchise’s earnings declined with each new film, and Bridget Jones’s Baby earned just $24 million domestically in 2016. With Mad About the Boy releasing the same day as Captain America: Brave New World, Universal Pictures likely opted to avoid competition at the box office.
